COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT

KOOL & KALM ®

Why is this feed so different to everything else?

Kool & Kalm is produced using cutting edge steam extrusion technology and is very different from most feeds which are either textured or pelleted. The starch component of the feed derived from corn is gelatinized in the extrusion process making it digestible in the small intestine. The steam extrusion process renders Kool and Kalm about 95% digestible, allowing the grain component to be fully digested in the small intestine. Extrusion also alters the fibers in the feed so they are easy for the bacterial flora in the large intestine and cecum to transform to useful energy. Because there is no raw starch to ferment in the cecum or large intestine, the correct pH is achieved in the gut enabling the necessary bacteria to flourish allowing digestion of fiber to take place efficiently, your horse becomes highly efficient at utilizing fibrous forage( hay or grass), and that can save you money.

Has Kool & Kalm been proven safe for my horse?

Yes, absolutely. We have tested this incredible feed on all sorts and breeds of horses, Every single day we have new customers phoning us and telling us how excited they are at the results they see in their horses. Several key horse rescue customers use Kool and Kalm because of its safety and ability to quickly rehabilitate a malnourished horse.

What does the name Kool & Kalm mean?

The Kool part of the name refers to the low heat of digestion and the advantage horses on this feed have in hot weather. Three types of heat affect horses and are detrimental to their performance; 1. environmental heat, 2.muscular heating due to physical work, and 3. heat of digestion (the heat generated by the digestive process). The ease with which Kool & Kalm is digested dramatically reduces the horses’ heat load and that effects performance, especially in hot weather. The Kalm part refers to the effect the balanced minerals and trace elements in the mineral pack can have on your horses mind. Proper neural function is only possible with the brain working as it intended and this requires the correct minerals in the right ratios. Kool and Kalm delivers the highest quality minerals to your horse to assist in optimum brain function. With the brain functioning as it should little energy is lost in nervousness, so the energy value of the feed is saved for useful work, instead of being dissipated as dangerous attitudes and behavior that are not commensurate with easy handling and interaction with humans.

Do the ingredients change during the year?

No, the premium ingredients Kool & Kalm is manufactured from are a fixed formula and this does not change from batch to batch. The product you buy in the summer is the same as in the middle of winter, and the wonderful results you will experience are constant. Most horse feed is produced on what is known in the industry as “least cost”. The feed is in the same bag with the same name, but contents may vary greatly during the year. When alternative ingredients become less costly the manufacturer will utilize them in the feed.

How does Kool & Kalm help performance horses?

Kool & Kalm helps performance horses by making them easier to handle and calmer. To be flighty and anxious takes energy, and that energy is taken from what horses eat. Kool & Kalm reserves the energy for more useful things like speed and power. Your horse should be warmed up before a speed event, and they will remain focused and calm until you ask for performance, then they will give 100%, then after the run is finished, back to calm and easy to handle.

How do I change over from the feed I use now?

The way you change your horse to this ultimate diet is just as different as the results you will achieve. DO NOT MIX KOOL & KALM WITH ANY OTHER TYPE OR BRAND OF HORSE FEED. The only acceptable addition is forage hay and water. The reason is the digestibility, it’s around 95%, and if you mix any other feed with Kool & Kalm, including other brands of extruded feed, you may induce a digestive upset that is easily avoidable. Please be aware that many vets are still unaware of the difference in Kool & Kalm to all other feeds and may advise you to change over slowly. If you have professional advice telling you this please ask them to call us and discuss why the difference.

All you do to change over, is stop feeding your horse all rations except hay and water for 12 hours, then feed the appropriate ration of Kool & Kalm (2 to 3 pounds) just like you were feeding the previous ration. This amount of feed assumes you are like most people and feed twice a day, morning and night making a total of 4 to 6 pounds per day.

How long before I see a change in my horse?

Dramatic changes in horses have been observed in as little as 24 hours, many owners report obvious improvement in their horses’ attitude within a week, and most owners notice very positive changes within 45 days.

What is the most common change?

The most commonly reported change is a calmer, easier to work with horse. The people that experience the most noticeable change are those that feed their horses plain oats or starch based sweet feeds.

What other changes can I expect in my horse?

Common feedback indicates that owners observe a change in their horses coat. The hair gets softer and finer, with an increase in color brightness and depth. The next change is in hoof quality. The hoofs soften up and become more pliable, so instead of just chipping away the hoof walls start to flex and toughen when exposed to hard or stony surfaces.

Will my horse be easier to train?

Kool and Kalm was originally designed to compliment the training process and assist in making horses calmer and more receptive to new concepts and ideas. Your horse will concentrate more intently and come down from an increase in mental stimulus quicker.

What classes of horses will benefit from Kool and Kalm

Horses of all ages, genders, and breeds can thrive on Kool & Kalm. The FREE CHOICE FEEDING concept for weanlings allows optimum growth with a digestive system not compromised with oil and fat, or raw starch. Senior horses thrive on the highly digestible nuggets which are gentle to the whole digestive system.

How much should I feed?

You can start with 4 pounds per day per 1000 pounds body weight. If you want more performance, you can add more feed, all the way up to free choice. Extended testing with all different types of horses in different situations revealed the average amount of Kool & Kalm consumed by a average sized horse is around 6 pounds a day.

How often should I feed?

You should break the daily ration up into at least two equal feeds. If you need to leave your horse unattended for longer than a day, you can place the feed in a dry manger out of the weather and let your horse feed himself during your absence. Make sure that a constant supply of clean water is available at all times for your horse to drink.

What is the storage life of Kool and Kalm

Because Kool & Kalm is a dry feed and has been processed to a temperature that kills mold and fungal spores, it will last at least a year if kept in a dry place.

Why is Kool & Kalm low fat?

A horses’ digestive system was never designed to digest large amounts of fat and oil, they are herbivores, grass eaters and most grasses have at the most 2.5-3% fat. We made Kool and Kalm to be as close to nature as we could to minimize the potential for digestive upsets.

Why is the protein 15%?

Protein is an essential energy source for the micro organisms that break down the feed into simple sugars that are used by the horse for energy. Without sufficient energy in the form of protein for the micro organisms to be fully active then the conversion of feed to energy is compromised and less efficient and feed bills will be higher than necessary.

What is digestible fiber?

Digestible fiber is that part of the plant material ingested by the horse, that is able to be easily broken down and converted into energy Not all fiber taken in by the horse is broken down and utilized as an energy source. Manure consists primarily of the undigested fiber a horse has consumed in the quest for energy.

Should supplements be added to Kool and Kalm?

Kool & Kalm is a complete ration and needs no additional supplementation for optimum nutrition, A normal equine digestive system has the capacity to manufacture all the necessary nutrients when supplied with the correct diet.

Are there drugs in the feed to calm the horses?

No absolutely not. The calming effect comes from the way the horse utilizes the feed. Reducing high doses of sugar in the feed and balancing the nutrients to assist in obtaining optimal brain chemistry function is how Kool and Kalm helps calm your horse.

Are there Pro-biotics in Kool & Kalm?

There are no Probiotics in Kool & Kalm because they are unnecessary with a healthy horse. Probiotics are used to repopulate the digestive system after the normally functioning bacteria killed by digestive anomalies, or events. An event could be as simple as the consumption of Antibiotics as a treatment or precaution after an injury or sickness, or the destruction of the normal intestinal bacterial flora due to the constant ingestion of raw starch causing fermentation in the cecum and colon and producing an environment that is not conducive to the growth of good bacteria. For most horses most of the time probiotic are not needed so we feel it is better to supply them from another source when needed and not to use them prophylactically in the feed.

Do I need to feed my horse alfalfa?

No you don’t, good forage hay like Coastal Bermuda, Tifton 44, Timothy, and other acceptable equine forage are just fine, remember, horses are grass eaters, and given the right digestive bacteria they are very good at getting energy from it. Feed Kool & Kalm at the suggested rates and you will have a horse that will become very efficient at getting the most from what you feed, doesn’t that make sense? After a short time you will notice your horse will not eat as much hay, but is in better physical condition, it’s called digestive efficiency, and that’s a saving you can measure in dollars and cents.

What if my horse accidently consumes more than his daily allowance of Kool & Kalm?

NOTHING. Kool & Kalm can be fed free choice. Always make sure that there is sufficient clean water available for your horse.
